It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has been renewed for three more seasons, however, Charlie Day also indicated that the sixteenth season might just be the last.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is now regarded as the longest running sitcom on television, after the airing of its fifteenth season which concluded in December 2021.
It also seems like the series is going to hold onto that title, seeing that the sixteenth season of the sitcom has already been confirmed.
FX confirmed the renewal of the sitcom for three more seasons in December 2020. However, while fans are looking forward to seasons 16, 17 and 18, Charlie Day recently cast doubt when he suggested that the sitcom might end with the upcoming sixteenth season.

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is the FXX flagship sitcom series that first debuted on the mother channel, FX, in 2005.
The sitcom was created by Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney, who also serve as the executive producers and stars of the show.
The premise of the sitcom is, “Five friends with big egos and small brains are the proprietors of an Irish pub in Philadelphia.” Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito round up the main cast in the roles of Deandra, better known as “Dee”, and Frank Reynolds, respectively.
With the upcoming sixteenth season, the series now stands as the longest running sitcom on US television, running for a total of 15 years.
Season 15 of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia concluded in December 2021. This season marked the group’s adventure to Ireland, and concluded with the emotional but comical season 15 finale.
This is because the group had to help Charlie complete an Irish custom for the dead by getting the remains of his newly found father, Shelley, up a hill.
Though initially it seemed like Charlie would need to hike up a hill with his father’s remains alone, the crew returned with a truck to help Charlie complete his hike with Shelley’s remains.
Thereafter, the crew returned to America, and the fans are now awaiting the new season of the sitcom to see where their adventures will take them.
The season veered from the expected 10 episodes per season that recent seasons of the show had. The reason for this was the pandemic and the delays it brought onto the production of the new season.
Considering that season 15 of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia concluded its eight-episode run in December 2021, fans and insiders speculate that the upcoming new season will follow the same release date pattern as the latest season. So season 16 will most likely return to FXX in December 2022.
Furthermore, it is also believed that the show will begin shooting the new season in May 2022, similarly to the shooting schedule for season 15, which was shot between May 2021 and October 2021.
However, despite the expectation of three more seasons, it seems that the sitcom might come to an end with the upcoming season 16.
In February 2022, Charlie Day, one of the sitcom’s creators and stars in the role of Charlie Kelly, was interviewed on the SmartLess podcast hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes.
During the interview, Day indicated that the show’s creators and writers may only have one more season left in them, suggesting that season 16 may be the last season of the show.
Sharing his sentiments, he in part stated, “15 years, we just did the fifteenth season. At least another one and we’ll see after that.” Day added, “We’ve done a lot of these. I don’t know how long we can keep ‘em up.”
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia continues to garner new fans, as the popularity of the sitcom continues over 15 years since its inception in 2005.
Some fans are not been familiar with earlier seasons of the sitcom, even more so since the first season of the show did not feature Danny DeVito, who only became part of the cast in season two to help boost viewership numbers.
Therefore, if you are looking to watch the entire 15 seasons of the sitcom, Hulu has made the entire catalogue of the FXX hit sitcom available.
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is considered the longest running sitcom on US television, as the show has been greenlit for three more seasons in light of the conclusion of season 15. FXX has confidence that the sitcom has enough to continue until season 18.
However, cast member and co-creator, Charlie Day, suggested otherwise by implying that producing new storylines 15 years later has become laborious. Therefore, he asserted that season 16 is guaranteed, but whether there will be more seasons afterwards is still to be decided.
