Danny DeVito reveals It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia season 16 is expected to begin filming in January and release sometime in Fall 2023.
Nearly a year after it was last on the airwaves, Danny DeVito has offered an It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 update. Following DeVito as Frank Reynolds, Glenn Howerton and Kaitlin Olson as Frank’s twins Dennis and Dee, Charlie Day as janitor Charlie Kelly, and series creator Rob McElhenney as Mac, the sitcom has been praised throughout its 15 seasons for its unhinged characters and unapologetically crass and topical humor. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for four seasons in 2020, but comments from the cast have hinted that the show may end after season 16.
Earlier this year, Day, who writes many of the show's episodes, said he didn’t think It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia would run for much longer and teased that season 16 could be the last. However, when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia was renewed for four seasons in 2020, FX and the cast made it sound like the show could run forever as they may never run out of ideas. No official statement has been released addressing the possibility of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ending its potential 18-season run short, but season 16 has been made a guarantee, and now audiences are getting an exciting update on when it will arrive.

In an interview with AV Club, Danny DeVitor shared that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 will begin filming in January 2023 and is expected to release in the Fall. Though keeping silent on its future, the Frank actor confirmed the show will return for another season, which is set to kick off filming in January. DeVito also revealed that he and his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia creatives are eyeing a Fall 2023 release.
DeVito’s Frank has been a stand-out character since his introduction in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 2, with Frank doing some of the most bizarre bits in the show, including hiding naked inside a couch or crawling around hairless and covered in hand sanitizer. More insane antics of the Paddy’s Pub gang are sure to come with season 16, especially with DeVito confirming the show's return and production timeline. Given audiences have been left hungry for more of the show since its December 2021 airing, including further explorations of real-world topics, as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 15 did with the pandemic.
Though the potential end of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is disappointing for viewers, the creators have taken their time preparing season 16 and could bring a satisfying end to the show. Until the creators or cast officially announce the end of the show, viewers can find comfort in the fact that season 16 will be coming and the iconic Danny DeVito seems nowhere near done performing outrageous scenes as Frank. While audiences await further news on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16, they can catch up with the prior seasons streaming on Hulu and listen to Day, Howerton and McElhenney's The Always Sunny Podcast, which drops new episodes on Mondays.
